STORYLINE

Hundreds of Muscovites braved the freezing cold on Sunday night to celebrate the first day of the eight day Jewish holiday, Hanukkah.

The first of eight candles was lit at an official ceremony in a square near the Kremlin.

Hanukkah recalls the struggle for religious freedom and commemorates the victory of the Jews over the Hellenistic Syrians in their refusal to adopt Hellenistic culture and values.

In the midst of the struggle, after reclaiming the Jewish temple, they relit the menorah -- a traditional eight-branched candelabrum, and an integral part of the temple service.

According to the Jewish belief, the little oil that was found in the destroyed temple miraculously kept the menorah alight for eight days.

Now a special nine-branched version of the menorah, named a hunukkia, is lit for the Hanukkah festival.
