Phil Collins Explains How He Got "That" Drum Sound

Phil Collins explains how he used compression and noise gated reverb to get that infamous drum sound that became not only his signature, but would end up being the standard recording technique of percussion in the 80s and beyond!

The song Phil ultimately gives an example of is "Intruder" from the 1980 album "Melt" by Peter Gabriel. Phil played drums on that album and the whole thing starts off with that iconic sound.

Special thanks to John Edginton for approved permission to use a clip from his interview with Phil. Make sure to check out his YouTube channel "John Edginton Documentaries". Incredible footage to explore on there from many amazing artist and musicians.
