In Japanese, the speaker can choose the pronoun by which he/she calls him/herself. Each pronoun carries a different connotation of the personality the speaker portrays of him/herself.

わたし Watashi
A standard, formal pronoun used by both men and women in both business and non-business contexts. It portrays yourself as a well-mannered businessperson, so it is the pronoun of choice in business communication.
Some people, especially at an elderly age, choose to stick with it even outside work contexts as it conveys elegance. When young men use it in informal settings, it may make them look slightly reserved.

おれ Oré
Commonly used to portray yourself as an informal, manly character in non-business context. It’s associated with recklessness and masculinity, especially if you roll your tongue when you say it. I use it when I meet with my guy friends as it carries a fraternal feel.

ぼく Boku
Commonly used to portray yourself as a gentle or harmless male in non-business context. I go by this pronoun in almost all informal settings. It’s usually the first pronoun boys learn to call themselves by, until they watch anime protagonists call themselves Oré and thus adopt it to try to sound cooler.

拙者 Sessha
You only hear this used by samurai characters in movies, manga, and anime. It’s a pronoun almost exclusive to the samurai class.
