In my Early-Modern mind, when I think of a "Fort" I think of a very large structure with maybe some trenches and redoubts placed on a great big open field of fire. But when I went to Fort Miles in Lewes, Delaware...I found that was very far from the truth in the twentieth century! Instead, many forts from the first and second world war might better be described as "networks," of gun batteries, observation towers, and barracks buildings. In this video I discuss some of the curiosities of Fort Miles, including its extraordinary (well, at least to me!) scale, and the terrifying firepower which it commanded.
