Justin Trudeau announced that he would resign as Canada's prime minister after holding the office since 2015.

"This country deserves a real choice in the next election and it has become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election," Trudeau said.

Asked about conservative leader Pierre Poillevre, Trudeau said his vision is "not the right one for Canadians." Trudeau's resignation leaves a vacuum in leadership for his liberal party to fill.
