At least one COVID-19 patient in the UK has died with the highly transmissible Omicron variant,... which the country's health authorities are saying the strain is spreading at a phenomenal rate.
They expect the variant to become the dominant strain in 24 to 48 hours.

Amid the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, the UK has reported its first death from the strain.
Saying the country had sadly witnessed the loss of a patient who had been infected with the Omicron variant,... British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the variant should not be taken lightly.

"So, I think the idea that this is somehow a milder version of the virus, I think that's something we need to set on one side and just recognize the sheer pace at which it accelerates through the population. So, the best thing we can all do is get our boosters."

Since the country detected its first Omicron case in late November,... Johnson has imposed tougher anti-virus measures.
On Sunday, he also urged the public to get booster shots to prevent the health service from being overwhelmed.
Explaining that the new mutation is spreading at a "phenomenal rate,"... Britain's health secretary said Monday that the Omicron variant now accounts for nearly 44 percent of all COVID-19 infections in London.
He added the highly transmissible variant would be the dominant strain in the capital within 48 hours.
In China,... its first case of the Omicron variant was reported on Monday in the northern port city of Tianjin.
Health authorities say the patient arrived from overseas last week,... adding the patient is currently being treated in isolation at hospital.
