5th December 1987 at Selhurst Park (7,208)
Charlton Athletic 0 (0): Bolder, Humphrey, Reid, Gritt, Shirtliff, Thompson, Peake, Campbell, Williams, Jones, Mortimer. Subs. (not used) Stuart, Bennett.
Everton 0 (0): Southall, Stevens, Pointon, Ratcliffe, Watson, Reid, Steven, Heath (Adams 79), Sharp, Snodin, Sheedy. Sub. (not used) Wilson.
Referee: R.B. Gifford (Llanbradach (Mid Glamorgan))
Delay: The kick-off was delayed because Gritt and Peake were both wearing number 4 shirts - Peake changed to the 7 shirt.
Lawrence blast: After the match, manager Lennie Lawrence, disappointed with another poor attendance, said: “It’s a sad indictment of football in South London that only 7,000 want to come and see the current champions of England.” Lawrence’s retort was surprising because it had long since been recognised that it didn’t matter too much who the visitors were – with the notable exceptions of Liverpool, Man. Utd. and the top London clubs – because thousands of Charlton fans had turned their backs on the club. They were just not interested in seeing their club play on a “foreign” field. Mostly, the crowd was always going to be below 10,000 if the visitors’ fans didn’t attend in vast numbers.
Confusion: For the record, Charlton still didn’t know how to spell the name of one of their first teamers – Paul Mortimer still be shown as Paul Mortimore in the official match programme.
