Gunner's Mate Second Class Charles Brooking originally wanted to join the Marines, but his father convinced him to join the Navy instead. Brooking was just 17, and a high school drop-out, when he went off to Sampson, New York, for basic training. After basic he was assigned to service on the small, but heavily armed PT boats.

Arriving in the Pacific Theater, Brooking and his fellow sailors aboard his PT boat were tasked with intense hit and run operations, carried out mostly at night, against Japanese vessels to prevent them from re-supplying troops on contested islands. Brooking's job was to man the twin .50 caliber machine gun and help protect his ship against both enemy ship and aircraft attacks.
