The Ruins of Fort Mohave and the Battle at Beale's Crossing

Описание к видео The Ruins of Fort Mohave and the Battle at Beale's Crossing

Located in western Arizona, on the Colorado River, the history of the Fort Mohave area dates back thousands of years. At the time of contact with the Spanish in the 1500s, the Mohave were the largest concentration of people in the southwest.

The Mohave were largely isolated from western civilization until 1857, when the United States decided to create a new federal wagon trail, and run it right through their territory. Soon there was conflict between the United States and the Mohave, and the Mohave War had begun.

In order to protect Beale's Crossing, a crossing spot on the Colorado River, the United States established Fort Mohave on a plateau overlooking the river.

The fort was occupied by the U.S. Army from 1859-1890, then was used as a boarding school for the next 40 years. After the school closed in the 1930s, the fort was left to fall into ruins.

In this video we visit the ruins of Fort Mohave, the spot where Beale's Crossing was located, a large set of geoglyphs known as the twins, and the spot where a ferry once crossed the Colorado River on the National Old Trails Road. We also visit the spot where Arizona, California, and Nevada meet.
