Sir Lindsay Hoyle was forced to apologise to MPs, saying: “It was never my intention for it to end up like this” , after his decision to allow amendments by both Labour and the Conservatives to be debated as part of a Gaza ceasefire vote.

He still faces a potential challenge to his position, with the Scottish National Party (SNP)’s Westminster leader suggesting he should go, and some backbench Tory MPs collecting signatories for a motion of no confidence.

The row led to MPs storming out the chamber.
