Scott Hammond, the Operations Director of SaxaVord Spaceport, spoke to the RAeS Highland Branch on 11 February 2022 about building the UK's first vertical launch spaceport. The talk covered:

• What New Space is and why Shetland is the best place to launch from,
• The challenges of building a spaceport,
• Safety planning,
• The range: what it is and how it is monitored.

Scott served 18 years in the RAF flying Tornado GR4s, he then had a brief spell flying A320s from Heathrow before returning to RAF Lossiemouth as the Chief Instructor on the GR4 simulator. Since then he has worked offshore as a consultant before becoming the Operations Director for SaxaVord. He is responsible for the design, planning, build and operation of the spaceport.
