2013: a tribute in Montpellier and a European film Panorama in full growth

When the Montpellier Mediterranean Film Festival paid tribute to Egyptian film director and producer Marianne Khoury last month, she said she was honoured, even more so as the tribute thus "feminises" a tradition of honouring male film professionals at the festival.

A managing partner of Misr International Films, the film production company founded by world-renowned Egyptian director Youssef Chahine, Marianne Khoury is not only a talented director, whose latest documentary Zelal (2010) on societal perceptions of the mentally ill was acclaimed both in Venice and Dubai, but she is also a passionate and committed producer.

"It's a great satisfaction for me to work with people who have stories to tell," she tells Euromed Audiovisual about combining her two passions of producing and directing. "It doesn't have to be me doing the entire film, it can be others as well. That's why I'm really interested in all the phases of filmmaking... development, production, and even the screening of films."

Ten days before the opening of the Panorama of European Film in Cairo, a festival she founded in 2004, Marianne Khoury speaks about the event's sixth edition. The 2013 Panorama sounds as promising as ever, with a selection of 50 films, many first-time filmmakers and a documentary rendez-vous.
