‘Bit rot’ is a topic frequently mentioned in preservation circles but often left unexplained or demonstrated. Settling on “the corruption of digital objects due to the flipping of random bits from 1 to 0 or 0 to 1” as a general descriptor, I sought to create a basic script for replicating the process.

The footage featured in this video is the result of 0.001% to 0.0001% file corruption, which usually resulted in 10-100 flipped bits. Admittedly, these numbers could be unrealistically high for natural bit rot but yielded more visible results. That being said, in many test cases a handful of tampered bits would cause many games to crash or fail to start at all.

I chose to showcase a mix of personal favorites and games I was unfamiliar with, focusing on those with lasting appeal or influence. I did not intend this video to be seen as a warning. Rather, it is a “what if?” in regards to improper preservation.
