In this clip from the U.S. Coast Guard CSPI internship event at Morris Brown College, student Jalyen Walter shares what excites him most about the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) and what keeps him grounded.

When we ask what stands out about Coast Guard CSPI, he talks about how the Coast Guard serves communities, focusing on taking care of people and making sure they’re safe and able to live comfortably. That’s a core part of the Coast Guard’s mission: saving lives, protecting waterways, and responding to emergencies in communities across the country.

Jaylen is from Chicago, and he explains that many young men like him don’t get opportunities like this to be on a college campus, to connect with the Coast Guard, and to explore an internship and scholarship program like CSPI. He’s grateful for the chance to learn, serve, and tell his story.

With Thanksgiving approaching, we also ask what he’s most grateful for. His answer: his mother. After losing his father, his mom became his teammate, working hard and helping him get through everything. He says he has to “make it for her.”

The College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) is a scholarship program that:
• Supports eligible students at HBCUs and other Minority Serving Institutions
• Provides up to two years of tuition, books, and fees, plus a full-time Coast Guard salary, housing allowance, and medical benefits while you finish your degree
• Leads to Officer Candidate School and a commission as a Coast Guard officer after graduation
