Industrial3D had the privilege of building a series of oil and gas engineering animations for the Petrosains Museum. This exploration animation explains wireline logging and how it helps engineers collect data and determine rock formations underground.

How do engineers know the characteristics of a rock formation hundreds of feet into the Earth? Do you know that they lower a special tool into the borehole to collect all sorts of information about what’s going on inside the Earth? This method is called Wireline Logging. Wireline Logging requires drilling to be stopped and the entire drill string removed before data can be collected. An electrical sensor called a sonde, connected to an electrical wire, is lowered into the hole. For example, this sonde transmits gamma rays into the rock formation. Different types of rocks will transmit back different intensities of gamma rays. Sandstone, a potential reservoir rock, reflects lower intensity gamma rays.

On the other hand, shale, which is not a reservoir rock, reflects stronger gamma rays than sandstone. The well log shows the location of sandstone layers that may contain oil or natural gas. There are many types of Wireline Logging tools. Some even use retractable “fingers” called calipers to “feel” the shape of the borehole. Wireline Logging tools have since evolved to include MWD (Measuring While Drilling) and LWD (Logging While Drilling). The main purpose of MWD and LWD is to collect data using equipment on the drill string while drilling takes place. It does not disrupt the drilling process.
