The father of an American woman jailed in Peru in connection with a guerilla attack is visiting her in Lima.

US citizen Lori Berenson was detained after the attack in the Peruvian capital last week.

Her father Mark found himself the centre of media attention on his arrival in Lima.

Mark Berenson arrived in Lima with two attorneys accompanying him.

He is here to visit his daughter Lori who is being held in a Peruvian jail in connection with a guerilla attack in Lima last week.

Local and international press mobbed Mr Berenson on his arrival in the Peruvian capital.

But all the exhausted father wanted to do was see his jailed daughter.

The U-S Consul in Peru is monitoring the case and helping Lori Berenson's family to keep in touch with her.

Peruvian authorities arrested Berenson and ten Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement members on December 1.

Known as the MRTA, the pro-Castro guerrillas were apprehended after a confrontation with security forces in an exclusive residential district of Lima.

After being spotted, the group fled to a nearby house and took a family hostage.

A bloody shoot-out between the guerrillas and army troops ensued, leaving four dead and 11 injured.

The US Consul General in Peru, Thomas Holliday, says the U-S government will not interfere with the investigation into the Berenson case.

Mr Holliday, Berenson's father and lawyers visited Lori Berenson at the headquarters of the Peruvian National Direction Against Terrorism where she is being held.

The U-S Consul told reporters that Lori Berenson is in good shape.

Asked about President Fujimori's declaration that the foreigners will be judged under Peruvian law, Holliday agreed this should be the case.

Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori says for reasons of national sovereignty, Berenson and another foreigner arrested in the attack will be tried according to Peruvian terrorism laws.
