Bonsai Project: Juniper Horizontalis

Starting the development process of a new bonsai project.

Another inexpensive tree bought from a local plant nursery.

I started the process by removing the lower branches, making the main trunk more visible, and wiring the main trunks with 3.5mm wire. The smaller branches were wired with 2mm wire.

The next phase was to remove all the soil, trying not to damage any roots. During summer, damaging roots can be extremely harmful to the tree.

The new substrate is a mix of akadama, kanuma, volcanic gravel, a little organic matter, and coconut peat.

There’s still a lot of work ahead trimming the longer shoots, but I want to wait until they grow into hardwood for that…
