Although everyone now knows the reality behind the lyrics of the song ‘Torna a Surriento‘, it is always worth repeating what some small individual still ignores the subject. The facts are simple. This masterpiece of Neapolitan music, which seems to be aimed at a distant lover, was actually dedicated to a man. We are in 1902, more precisely between 15th and 17th September.
Giuseppe Zanardelli, the current President of the Council, to keep faith with a commitment made in March 1901 went on an official visit to Sorrento before continuing to Basilicata. The purpose of his journey was to see with his own eyes the problems that afflicted one of the poorest regions of the peninsula so as to best develop the project of the extraordinary intervention of the State in the South.
Giuseppe decided to stay at the Grand Hotel of the city, owned by the mayor Guglielmo Tramontano. In those days the situation in Sorrento was catastrophic. Bumpy roads, dilapidated houses, non-existent services. To entice the distinguished guest to do something for Sorrento, the mayor asked Ernesto and Giambattista De Curtis to compose a song in honour of Giuseppe Zanardelli. The two, however, did not do as requested. In fact, they only added two quatrains per song that, in reality, had already been composed eight years earlier, to be precise in 1894.
The then President of the Council greatly appreciated the dedication so as to reciprocate the kindness received with the construction of a post office and a sewerage network. This is the legend. In reality, Guglielmo Tramontano, the mayor of Sorrento, wanted only to make Giuseppe Zanardelli feel the closeness of the population. There was no second intention in the dedication. After a couple of years from his official debut 'Torna a Surriento' he participated in the Piedigrotta party, becoming an international success.
Nonostante ormai tutti conoscano la realtà che si cela dietro il testo della canzone ‘Torna a Surriento‘, giova sempre ribadire ciò che qualche sparuto individuo ancora ignora sull’argomento. I fatti sono semplici. Questo capolavoro della musica napoletana, che sembra rivolto ad una innamorata lontana, in realtà è stato dedicato ad un uomo. Siamo nel 1902, più precisamente tra il 15 e il 17 settembre.
Giuseppe Zanardelli, l’allora Presidente del Consiglio, per mantenere fede ad un impegno assunto nel marzo del 1901 si recò in visita ufficiale a Sorrento prima di proseguire alla volta della Basilicata. Lo scopo del suo viaggio era quello di vedere con i propri occhi i problemi che affiggevano una delle regioni più povere della penisola in modo tale da sviluppare al meglio il progetto di intervento straordinario dello Stato nel Mezzogiorno.
Giuseppe decise di alloggiare presso il Grand Hotel della città, di proprietà del sindaco Guglielmo Tramontano. A quei tempi la situazione a Sorrento era catastrofica. Strade sconnesse, case diroccate, servizi inesistenti. Per invogliare l’illustre ospite a fare qualcosa per Sorrento, il sindaco chiese ad Ernesto e Giambattista De Curtis di comporre una canzone in onore di Giuseppe Zanardelli. I due però non fecero quanto richiesto. Si limitarono infatti ad aggiungere solo due quartine ad canzone che, in realtà, era stata già composta otto anni prima, per la precisione nel 1894.
L’allora Presidente del Consiglio apprezzò moltissimo la dedica tanto da ricambiare la gentilezza ricevuta con la costruzione di un ufficio postale e di una rete fognaria. Questa è la leggenda. In realtà Guglielmo Tramontano, il sindaco di Sorrento, voleva solo far sentire la vicinanza della popolazione a Giuseppe Zanardelli. Nella dedica non vi era affatto una seconda intenzione. Dopo un paio d’anni dal suo debutto ufficiale ‘Torna a Surriento’ partecipò alla festa di Piedigrotta divenendo un successo internazionale.
