Prince Harry's pursuit of a phone-hacking lawsuit against the Daily Mirror is shaping up to be a notable clash with Piers Morgan, the outspoken journalist who formerly edited the tabloid. This legal battle is seen as Prince Harry's tactical move against his long-standing adversary, Morgan, whose reputation is possibly facing its greatest test yet after rebounding from a scandal in 2021 when he labelled Meghan Markle as dishonest.

London’s High Court opened the trial this week. The case, revolving around the Duke of Sussex's accusations of illicit phone hacking and information gathering by the Daily Mirror during Morgan's editorship, is being framed as a confrontation between the royal and his detractor.

In court, Prince Harry's legal team asserted that Morgan was at the epicenter of illicit reporting practices at Mirror Group Newspapers, which includes the Sunday Mirror and People. One remarkable instance involved the Daily Mirror, under Morgan's leadership in 1999, employing private investigators to access confidential financial details from Prince Michael of Kent's bank account by pretending to be his accountants.

The illicitly obtained information was the foundation for a Daily Mirror story claiming that the Queen's cousin was heavily in debt and had an unauthorized bank overdraft. Despite Prince Michael’s lawyers' allegations that the financial records were obtained illegally, Morgan brushed aside their concerns, assuring them the data had come from a reliable source. Nonetheless, the Mirror's publisher eventually settled a legal claim from Prince Michael and issued an apology.

Prince Harry's lawyer, David Sherborne, argued that this incident is indicative of a culture of pervasive illegality and cover-ups within the company. He maintained that it was implausible that Morgan and the company's legal department were unaware of the methods used to report the Prince Michael story.

Morgan, who has consistently denied phone hacking or instructing others to do so, now finds himself on the back foot. He maintains his innocence, stating, “I’ve never hacked a phone. I’ve never told anybody to hack a phone.”

Despite this, Morgan refuses to apologize to Prince Harry for the phone-hacking allegations, instead suggesting that the Duke should apologize to the royal family for his alleged privacy breaches.

Morgan, who edited the Daily Mirror from 1995 to 2004, has had a diverse career including a tenure as the host of "Good Morning Britain" and his current role as host of "Piers Morgan Uncensored" on TalkTV. Despite his controversial stance on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex following their interview with Oprah Winfrey, Morgan has continued to share his views in various publications.

As for the phone-hacking allegations, Morgan has condemned the practice, labeling those who engage in it as lazy journalists. He remains adamant that he was unaware of any illegal activities during his time as editor, despite suggestions that his hands-on approach would have made him privy to such practices.

Prince Harry's lawsuit against the Daily Mirror is the first of three phone-hacking cases against UK newspapers going to trial. The Duke is expected to testify, marking a historic moment as the first senior royal to testify in a court case since the 19th century. While the Mirror News Group has admitted to phone hacking and compensated victims, they insist that many of the articles believed to be the result of phone hacking were actually based on legal reporting methods.
