DESCRIPTION
El Salvador is becoming more popular among travelers. By promoting its beaches and volcanoes as well as by adopting Bitcoin as official currency, the country has managed to attract a growing number of tourists and expats. A whopping 1.1 million visitors entered the country during the first half of 2022. That’s a lot of visitors for a place that used to be known as the murder capital of the world!

After spending almost 2 months here, we came across 10 things we’d like to have known before we came. So, if you’re considering a visit or even a move to El Salvador, you simply have to watch this video until the end.

REASON 1: CLIMATE
The climate here is tropical, which means it’s hot and sunny year-round. If you’re like me you’ll wear only a few clothes and still sweat a lot. You’ll sweat A LOT.

Instead of four seasons there are only two: the dry season and the wet season. You’ve guessed it, the dry season is hot and dry, whereas the wet season is hot and humid. And since El Salvador is close to the equator, the sun comes up and sets around the same time every day.

REASON 2: COLD SHOWERS
Don’t you just love the pleasant feeling of standing in a soothing stream of warm water that gently caresses your skin as you step into the shower? Well, if you’re coming to El Salvador you’re out of luck, because most houses here don’t have a water heater.

REASON 3: CREEPY CREATURES
Are you one of those types that’s afraid of hairy spiders, big bugs, smelly skunks, giant toads and other visitors in your home? Then you may want to avoid El Salvador!

Among the most dangerous animals that live here are crocodiles, coyotes, Boa Constrictors, sharks, coral snakes and pit vipers!

REASON 4: CAR-CENTRIC
If you like to walk around and do everything on foot, then you definitely shouldn’t come to El Salvador. The country is mostly car-centric, so without a car it’s hard to have a normal life.

REASON 5: TRAFFIC
Even if Salvadorans are one of the nicest people we’ve met, as soon as they get behind the wheel they somehow turn into aggressive and reckless drivers.

Driving around the capital, San Salvador, is a nerve-wracking experience with some of the most dangerous driving situations every day.

REASON 6: SHOPPING
If your lifestyle depends on having access to stores with an extensive selection of products and the convenience of overnight shipping at an affordable price, then you may want to skip El Salvador.

REASON 7: GUNS
Guns are the symbol of violence for many people around the world. They think no one should carry them aside from law enforcement. But here in El Salvador, it’s very normal to see many guns in the streets.

Banks, shops, gated communities and other places are all guarded by private security guards armed with guns. For people from countries with tight gun control laws, this may be shocking at first, but we found it easy to get used to.

REASON 8: POLLUTION
If you’re worried about climate change and environmental destruction, you may want to cancel your airplane ticket to El Salvador. The truth is, this isn’t quite the eco-friendly paradise you’ve been dreaming of.

And where many places in the world enforce strict air quality regulations, in El Salvador you’ll see multiple-decades-old vehicles whose exhaust fumes will remind you of the thick, black coal smoke during the industrial revolution.

REASON 9: STRAY DOGS
There are stray dogs everywhere. Even though I love dogs, I’ve adopted two from Spain. It's problematic when there are so many that they frequently walk across highways where traffic is racing along.

If you’re a dog lover like me, you won’t like the sight of emaciated, sick or limping dogs in the streets. Neither will you feel good when you inevitably see one in the middle of the road, passed away after being hit by a car.

REASON 10: MEDIA
If you form your opinions based on what you see in the news, then chances are you don’t wanna come to El Salvador.

If you’re more open-minded and like to draw conclusions from your own experience, then you might be pleasantly surprised by what you find here.
