Sunday, March 19, 2017 was one of those rare sunny days at the end of winter in Seattle. We open with an Argosy boat taking a tour of Elliott Bay.
Next up is BNSF 4675 pulling a local manifest train. This train represents a lot of products that come from the Pacific Northwest, but one thing that caught my eye were hopper cars loaded with iron and steel scraps. I recently learned that Seattle has its own steel mill! These scraps are destined to be recycled by the Nucor Steel Mill which turns 80% of it into rebar for buildings. With all the construction in downtown Seattle, there is a great market for this product!
Exporting grain harvested from the heartland is big business in Washington. Here, a bulk carrier awaits its turn at the Louis Dreyfus Grain Terminal.
A guy in a motorized scooter rolls up to watch BNSF 5765 come to a stop at the North Portal. I don’t see a lot of Z trains rolling through Seattle, so I was happy to see this one. When it came to a stop, I knew that it was probably waiting on the manifest train to move down a little further and clear the block, so I moved, hoping to get different angle of it.
Some things don’t work out as planned. When I got down to street level, BNSF 5318 came out of the tunnel on main 1 pulling a loaded grain train for Louis Dreyfus. Hoping that it would pass so I could video the Z train, I was a bit disappointed when it stopped to throw some switches into the grain yard. Of course the Z train passed behind it. I was happy to see BNSF 1011 doing DPU duty at the end. This GE C44-9W was built in 1996.
