What is short selling or "shorting" as it's frequently called by traders?

Well, let's assume you consider an asset grossly overpriced and want to allocate capital in a way which ensures you'll be rewarded when the price of that asset goes down... short selling enables you to do just that.

When shorting, you're essentially borrowing the asset in question so as to immediately sell it and once (if) the price drops to a level you feel comfortable with, you buy the asset you've just sold so as to return it to the entity you've borrowed it from and the difference will represent your profit.

This "definition" might sound complicated but after watching this one minute explanation and analyzing the examples that have been provided, it will become clear that short selling isn't exactly in the realm of rocket science.

Like anything else that's economics-related, shorting is a simple enough concept to grasp if it's explained to you properly!
