Funds for refugees in Mizoram: A big win for ZPM?

Amid all the news about the Bihar and Andhra Pradesh budget, sorry, I mean, Union Budget, one news from the northeast that we believe somehow got a little lost was the Centre finally acknowledging that there are refugees in Mizoram. Earlier this week, the Central government finally approved Rs 5 crore for the refugees, and this has to be one of the biggest achievements of the ZPM government which has been in power for just a little over six months.

First, even though ZPM has not joined the NDA, it made sure that it does not ‘waste’ much time pointlessly critiquing the centre, and instead tried to work with them. Look at the FMR, for example. Sure, the state government criticised the end of FMR and allowed for protests to take place. But the ZPM government also made it clear it would not stop security forces in any manner, way or form. The ZPM, since taking charge, has also tried to stay away from commenting too much on the Manipur violence. The party knows that it promised the sun and stars to its electorate, but now that it is in power, it can do so only with the support of the Centre, regardless of whether they like the Central government.
