What’s wrong with social smoking?

Many people tell others (including their doctors) that they just smoke “socially” i.e., only or mostly when they are with social company.

The problem with considering oneself as “just” a social smoker is that it actually may be a misrepresentation of the actual frequency and quantity of smoking.

The only way a “social smoker” can avoid smoking more is to keep a record of the number of cigarettes he is smoking.

The second danger with social smoking is that it is harmful.
Intermittent smokers are at risk of developing major disease such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer and coronary heart disease.

Another health harm of social smoking is that it is especially appealing to the teens and young adults. The vast majority (95%) of smokers start smoking before they reach the age of 21 and 80% of smokers are hooked on cigarettes by that age.

Many of these young smokers started with social smoking.

The tobacco industry are well aware of this and has been developing and modifying nicotine delivery by cigarettes through the decades to make them more addictive or appealing to kids.

Unfortunately these also made cigarettes more lethal – thus more people are developing major health problems today even though the average number of cigarettes smoked are less than in the 1950’s.

Big tobacco are also cognizant of the appeal of social media among teens and young adults and has been covertly paying social media influencers to subtly promote smoking as natural and cool, when the reality is that smoking not only carries major health risks but is also aesthetically displeasing (e.g. causing premature wrinkling and discoloration of teeth).

We should say “NO!” to social smoking!
