As a kid I was influenced by the movies Sands Of The Kalahari and Flight of the Phoenix. And I've loved sand dunes ever since. So, a trip to White Sands National Monument has been in the cards. And White Sands is amazing. Super white sand dunes made of gypsum are different than other dunes. These dunes are made from gypsum washing off the surrounding mountains into a basin where as the water evaporated, it formed crystals. The crystals were worn down into the white sands you see. It's really interesting and beautiful.
There are lots of things to do at White Sands. And we hiked, observed neat animals that have adapted to the sand and even rode down the dunes on a sled. But we were really there to enjoy the great beauty of the dunes and photograph them at sunset. I had learned in other dunes that you need to be there during the 'golden hours' just after dawn and before sunset because the shadows give you the ability to see the texture of the sand and shape of all the dunes. During full sun, it looks pretty much all white. But with the shadows, dunes take on depth and life. We were lucky that on the 2nd day we got some clouds and even a bit of rain which produced beautiful rainbows over the dunes, even if it ruined the shadows. But all in all, White Sands is a great place to visit with lots to do. We'll be heading back to see the lake where the crystals form during the winter when the area is open to the public.
