In the mega corruption case involving billions of rupees related to the M6 Motorway from Hyderabad-Matiari and Naushahro Feroze to Sukkur, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court has acquitted 10 accused due to lack of evidence. These included two former Mukhtiarkars, three accountants, and three tapedars (revenue officers), among a total of 12 individuals who were found not guilty.
In NAB Reference No. 1 of 2023, submitted before Accountability Court Judge Naseem Jalal Soomro in Hyderabad, the NAB presented a report stating that no charges could be proven against the 12 accused. Out of the 12, eight had filed applications under Section 265-K through senior advocate Naeem Sehto and also presented arguments in court.
After hearing arguments on the Section 265-K applications, the court ordered that the names of 10 of the accused be removed from the case. The individuals whose names were removed include former Mukhtiarkar of Mehrabpur Shafiq Ahmed Soomro, former Mukhtiarkar of Bhiria Niaz Ali Aijun, the personal secretary to the Deputy Commissioner of Naushahro Feroze Abdul Aziz Ansari, senior clerk Abdul Ghaffar Depar, former tapedars Ghulam Haqani Sehto and Tanveer Ali Mallah, former accounts clerk Rustam Khosa, private contractor Khalid Masood Channa, former social welfare officer Sajjad Ahmed Memon, and two stamp vendors Aftab Ahmed Soomro and Siraj Ahmed Memon.
In total, 12 individuals have been acquitted in NAB Reference No. 1 related to the mega corruption case. However, only 10 of them had filed 265-K applications and were acquitted based on arguments; two others, stamp vendor Siraj Memon and notary public Abdul Ghaffar Mari, had not filed applications under this section.
It is worth mentioning that in the Hyderabad to Sukkur M6 Motorway corruption case, the former Deputy Commissioner of Matiari Adnan Rashid, an Assistant Commissioner, Sindh Bank manager Tabish Ali Shah, Mashooq Chandio, and several other accused have already entered plea bargains with NAB.
The corruption involved misappropriation of billions of rupees allocated for the construction of the Hyderabad-Matiari, Naushahro Feroze to Sukkur motorway and land acquisition for the project. In 2023, NAB had nominated 42 individuals in Reference No. 1. After the latest court proceedings, due to insufficient evidence, 12 accused have been acquitted, while the court has ordered to continue the case against the remaining 30 accused.
