Baby & Them: Ep. 3 Non-Binary Parenting with Aurora Maoz ✨

“Baby & Them” is a series of interviews that celebrates families with varying LGBTQ2SIA+ gender identities, expressions, and romantic orientations. The series explores both birthing and parenting through lived Queer experiences beyond the binary. “Baby & Them” centers information, resources, and community building for non-binary parents, parents-to-be, and allies. It is also an educational space to learn about the range of perspectives and approaches to gender-free child rearing.

Episode 3: Aurora Maoz (she/her) @AuroraMaoz

Aurora (she/her) is a queer, cisgender, white, Jewish, motherless mother, who lives in Washington Heights, New York, with her partner, Drew (he/him), and their four-year old child. Aurora is currently pregnant with her second child. She and Drew plan to parent their second kiddo, as they have their first, in a gender-creative way. By day, she is a public defender with a deep commitment to returning dignity and humanity to those who are targeted by the white supremacist criminal legal system. Aurora is also an adjunct professor of law at St. John’s Law School, and a participant in the NYC chapter of Integrated Schools.

While gender-creative parenting has sometimes not been easy because of the constant external societal pressure to gender babies from birth (and even in utero!), on the whole, parenting in this way has been both joyous and beautiful! Aurora hopes that sharing her experiences will help others feel less alone in their journeys.
