Almaden is also known as "Cowtown" - because of the free-ranging cows that graze on the sides of the road - in fact anywhere - within the town boundaries. You get pot luck, sometimes they are there, and sometimes not. They were there as I travelled to Chillagoe, but not on my return.
Almaden is also an overnight stop for the Savannahlander motor rail that travels between Cairns and Forsayth.
