MTV is pulling the plug on "Buckwild" -- canceling the reality series that was rocked just 8 days ago by the death of cast member Shain Gandee. Four episodes of the second season had already been filmed, according to TMZ, but are not expected to make it to air. However, MTV is expected to show a special that was filmed two months prior to Shain's death. The show followed the lives of 9 young people in a rural West Virginia town.

The series was originally renewed for a second season in early February, after averaging 3 million viewers per episode. Buckwild" may have been canceled, but the producer J.P. Williams is determined to keep the MTV reality show alive.

TMZ UPDATE: 8:22 AM PT -- A rep for MTV tells TMZ ... "Given Shain's tragic passing and essential presence on the show, we felt it was not appropriate to continue without him."

The rep adds, "Instead, we are working on a meaningful way to pay tribute to his memory on our air and privately."

MTV says ... this weekend, it will have a "day of programming dedicated to Shain in which we will air the entire first season of 'Buckwild'." Shain Gandee, who will be remembered in a special set to air Sunday at 8 ET/PT.
