Come and enjoy a cab ride and buffer cam railway journey on a steam train, Joan is a 102 year old steam locomotive and she takes us on a magnificent ride around Marine Lake in Rhyl, North Wales. Fans of narrow gauge and miniature gauge railways will know this one as it is the oldest miniature railway still operating!

The 1 mile journey circles marine lake and features a number of crossing points, a long back straight and stunning scenery the whole way around. Of course with it being a loop you end up exactly where you started off, making it a really easy and fun family trip. This railway was first opened in 1911 making it the oldest miniature railway in Britain. It also has been a firm favourite holiday feature for millions of people, and will have turned thousands of young people into railway fans for life.

Joan (4-4-2) was built in 1920 by Albert Barnes & Co, and other than a brief spell at Belle Vue Zoo and Windmill Farm Railway she has worked at Rhyl her entire life. Having grown up in the North West and always had family holidays at Rhyl, this loco has always been close to me!

Tickets for the railway are cheap, at just £3 per adult and £2 per child (correct April 2022) it is really good value, children under 2 and dogs ride for free if accompanied by an adult. Unlike a lot of miniature railways that are often out of sight this one really does pass close to the public, it is fantastic to see all the people (on and off the train) waving and smiling at each other, pointing when the loco whistles and generally just enjoying their holidays. There really is a different vibe to this railway and it benefits from every second of it!
