Assam: Hunger strike demanding implementation of Article 244(A) called off

The hunger strike by former member of the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council Daniel Langthasa was called off on July 18 following the submission of a memorandum to the additional magistrate of the district.

The development came after seven days during which several tribal bodies and civil society organisations expressed solidarity with Langthasa. Initiated under the banner of 6th Schedule Protection Committee, Langthasa had placed four charter of demands which include the implementation of Article 244A that allows the centre to establish an autonomous state within Assam in areas that come under the Sixth Schedule.

Along with the calling off of the hunger strike, the committee also declared Dima Hasao as an autonomous state.

This is not a demand but it is already mentioned in the constitution. Today July 18, 2024, is a historic day and here at Haflong town, we declare that our areas come under an autonomous state as per Article 244(A). This day will be remembered as Autonomous State Day," Langthasa said while speaking to the media.

The hunger strike began on July 12. Along with the implementation of Article 244(A), the committee also demanded the review of the 125th Constitution Amendment Bill, the end of the Panchayat system in areas under the 6th Schedule, and an increase in Assam assembly seats for Dima Hasao district.
