This was an unusual case with various problems colliding over the scalp at the same time. Focusing on all symptoms and causes always gives the best chance for results. In this case, the most obvious problem was described by Miss M age 17 as ‘rapid hair loss, hair thinning and bald patches’.

Microscopic diagnosis revealed active alopecia areata with existing bald patches but also areas that started as patches 5 months earlier and had now overlapped, started to regrow, but were not growing back properly and now suffering diffuse thinning. We could confirm this was non-scarring alopecia which means the follicle is still intact and there is a good chance of hair regrowth.
