Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic socialist who has promised to make New York City affordable again, is the projected winner of the mayoral election.

The 34-year-old led in the polls ahead of his nearest rival Andrew Cuomo. The New York City Board of Elections said it had seen the highest voter turnout in more than five decades, since 1969, with more than two million people going to the polls.

Across New York, Mamdani watch parties were filled with loud cheers as the networks began to call the vote for the Democratic nominee.
