My name is Dr. Nishaki Mehta. I am a heart doctor at the University of Virginia, and I have been practicing medicine since 2007.

I specialize in a field of cardiology where we focus on comprehensive management of pacemakers, defibrillators, and ablation procedures.

My earliest introduction to medicine was while growing up in India where my grandfather was a trade union leader, and he ran a medical ambulance to serve tribal villages. He would always request healthcare providers to volunteer their time, and I rode the ambulance with him on weekends and school holidays. That was inspiring.

The success of the outcomes of these procedures are very heavily dependent on the patient’s overall lifestyle and their overall health status. When I meet them and their families in clinic, I spend a fair amount of time, not just to discuss the electrical heart rhythm disorder for which I am seeing them, but also to talk about strategies to improve their heart healthy baseline.

Each patient is a different individual. Each patient’s care needs to be customized uniquely to their profile. And if I can see a patient feeling more energetic, being able to do more and enjoy life more, that to me is probably the most rewarding experience.
