Steam rose from the crater of a snow-capped volcano in Alaska as a research team flew over it on February 7, footage released on Wednesday, February 19 showed. The Alaska Volcano Observatory is monitoring Mount Spurr as it shows increased activity.

The observatory released a statement with the video.

"Enjoy this spectacular video of the summit crater of Mount Spurr, taken by AVO staff during fieldwork on February 7, 2025. The crater lake, which formed sometime between May and June 2024, is mostly covered in chunks of ice, with some turquoise water visible. The fumaroles (steam/gas vents) are the source of the white vapor plumes on the north shore.

"While the changes at Spurr summit over the past year have been notable, Crater Peak, the vent location of the 1953 and 1992 eruptions, remains completely snow filled.

"Mount Spurr is currently at color code/alert level YELLOW/ADVISORY due to earthquakes, ground deformation, and melting of ice in the summit crater. AVO is closely monitoring the volcano for changes that could indicate a more imminent eruption."
