How to Fix Uneven Door Stuck Closed, Door Frame Alignment

How to repair door stuck closed

If your front door is stuck shut, you have to to align it back into position so that you have an 1/8" reveal line all the way around the front door frame. When you have a front door stuck close, you'll see as you examine the reveal line around the crooked doors that it might be 1/16" at the top, but 1/4" space at the bottom of the door. We usually fix this, fix front door frame. Here is where you learn how to repair front doors.

How to repair door frame

Usually when you have a front door stuck shut part of the problem is the fact that you now need to know how to repair door frames, because often the front door frame is not anchored tightly to the buck plate, causing movement of the door frame, and thus a crooked door frame. So if your front door won't open easily because your door is stuck closed let's fix the front door.

So now you have to figure out how to repair door hinges and how to repair door hinge screw holes to align front doors into their frames. If you'r wondering how to repair door hinge screws, often times the fix is putting in a longer screw with a wider diameter, to pierce through the door jamb, and through the buck plate.

How to fix a door

Here in Florida, where we have Hurricane codes to worry about for fasteners on the front door, we have much harder work to fix crooked door frames. We often use 3" to 4" Tapcon concrete anchor screw to pierce the door jamb, through the buck plate, and 1 1/4" embedded into the cement block wall behind the door frame's buck plate. That's how to fix a door, you start by fixing a door frame first, that is the first step to help align front doors.

How to fix front door

Now that we have completed the fix front door frame part of this project, begin to fix front doors themselves, and we'll try to align door hinges to balance and align front doors to give us a perfect 1/8" reveal line all the way around the front door frame. This will stop your front door sticking.

How to repair door hinges

To align the front doors we often have to get a wood chisel to scrape out about 1/16" of would in the door hinge mortise cut out of the door frame. This allows the door hinge to sit deeper into the mortise, which adjusts the door an extra 1/16" toward the wall.
