STORYLINE:

A protest held by hundreds of teachers erupted violently inside the headquarters of Mexico's PRI party (Institutional Revolutionary Party) on Monday, demanding a party member be arrested on murder charges.

The teachers' union members broke glass doors, security cameras and windows.

They also broke the locks from the main entrance gate, forcing themselves inside the PRI party gates.

The CNTE is a dissident teachers' group from the official National Teachers Union.

CNTE members demanded Elba Esther Gordillo be put on trial for her alleged involvement in the murder of 100 teachers, including professor Misael Nuñez, and the oppression of 174 union workers in the 1980s.

The General Prosecutor's Office (PGR) said on 15 May 2003 that it could not find enough elements to trial Esther Gordillo, or any of the other people accused by CNTE.

In the past weeks, teachers' unions have demanded the cancellation of Elba Esther Gordillo's registration as a candidate of the Revolutionary Institutionary Party (PRI) to the Mexican congress.

Elections for the 500 congress seats are going to be held on 06 July 2003.

Gordillo is a former National Teacher's Union leader (1989-1994) and is being accused by teachers of illegally receiving money from the teacher's union to finance her political activities.

Gordillo is the PRI's current General Secretary and President of the National Committee for Political Action of the National Teachers' Union (SNTE).

The PRI party governed Mexico for 71 years until the year 2000, when Vicente Fox won the Mexican presidential elections for the National Action Party (PAN).

Teachers also demanded better working conditions and more money for public schooling.
