Many of today’s most pressing health issues are rooted in socioeconomic and racial disparities that cannot be resolved solely by physicians or hospitals. A hospital’s traditional approach to community health programs, including health screenings, immunizations and education programs, is no longer enough to deal with the health implications of complex issues such as hunger, income disparity, and homelessness. To help facilitate more sustainable, long-term strength in the health of vulnerable communities, a changed role for the hospital is imperative.
