This sessions aims to stimulate the discussion about scaling up investment in Building with Nature as common practice in water infrastructure planning.

Building with Nature is a holistic and inclusive design approach that integrates Nature-based solutions into water infrastructure projects. The approach enables adaptive and resilient designs such as for coastal defence and river basin management with multiple benefits for nature and society. Despite the popularity of NbS, the number of projects actually implemented around the globe remains limited, with the majority of infrastructure investment still targeted towards conventional solutions.

There are several barriers to address, including:
• The greater perceived uncertainty in the performance and implementation of Building with Nature.
• How to deal with such a dynamic and multi-functional approach in project procurement, contracting, project design and implementation, project management and maintenance

The session discusses the development of new approaches for business cases at the project level, supported by creating an enabling regulatory and institutional environment at the (public or private) investor level.

A diverse panel existing of project partners and investors discuss how to develop a sound business case to enable financing of Building with Nature projects combining avoided costs and important co-benefits, and how to overcome challenges in quantifying those. In addition, we will discuss some key barriers to overcome for creating an enabling regulatory and institutional environment at the public or private investor level. The discussion will be inspired by the compelling business case from Building with Nature project in Indonesia
