I explain where oud comes from, what it smells like and the oud fragrances that showcase it best

In the Middle East, they take their oud very seriously but it has only caught on in a big way in the UK in last few years. It is derived from the tropical agar tree, which is thought to originate in Assam in India. When the tree is infected by a mould known as Phialophora parasitica it reacts by producing a dense, dark and fragrant resin to protect itself. It is the resin-embedded heartwood of the tree that is the source of oud.

The lemon, pink pepper and bergamot that are used to give an entry of sparkle to this oud-based fragrance also help in making it more palatable for those who can find oud a little overwhelming. A great daytime fragrance (not something you could say of many oud-based scents), it has an assured elegance, is classic and pretty much genderless. Influenced by the elements of a royal Persian palace, created by Olivier Creed and described as a rich, woody, oriental fougere, it also has a green and spicy aromatic quality.
