Cleveland Heights City Council has approved a motion of no confidence against Mayor Kahlil Seren, whose battles with lawmakers coupled with allegations surrounding his wife's behavior have increasingly garnered controversy in recent weeks.

Several legislators along with community members have already called on Seren to resign, which he has thus far refused to do. Council has confirmed it doesn't have any real power to remove the mayor from office, but members nevertheless wanted to formally express their disapproval due to what they call "a duty to act when the public trust in the executive branch of government is significantly diminished."

"This Council hereby expresses a formal loss of confidence in the Mayor of Cleveland Heights," the resolution reads. It adds, "The Council affirms the right of all city employees, officials, and residents to raise concerns about workplace conditions and conduct and reiterates its commitment to ensuring that such concerns are met with respect, seriousness, and protection from retaliation."

The final vote at Monday's council meeting was 6-1, with only Councilman Anthony Mattox Jr. voting in the negative. The resolution was drafted and introduced by Councilman Jim Petras, who is running against Seren in this year's mayoral election.

"None of us wanted to be in this situation, but the reality is that we are," Petras said Monday. "This is an important step forward, but there's so much more than we need to do."
