Hello, for those who love cats, cooking, traveling and ordinary days in Japan.

Ryogoku is an area in Sumida Ward, Tokyo, rich in history and culture.

★Geography and Access
● Location: Ryogoku, Sumida Ward, Tokyo
● Nearest stations: Ryogoku Station (JR Chuo-Sobu Line and Toei Oedo Line)
● The area around the station is compact and walkable, making it ideal for a half-day cultural stroll through sumo heritage, Edo history, and local cuisine.

★Historical Significance
● Ryogoku was once the border between Musashi and Shimousa provinces, giving the area its name (“Ryogoku” means “two provinces”).
● The construction of Ryogoku Bridge in the Edo period transformed the area into a bustling hub of commerce and entertainment.
● The neighborhood played a key role in the development of Edo culture, including kabuki, ukiyo-e, and fireworks.

★Cultural Highlights
● Ryogoku Kokugikan: Japan’s premier sumo stadium, hosting three Grand Tournaments annually. The building also houses the Sumo Museum.
● Edo-Tokyo Museum (currently under renovation): A landmark museum showcasing the evolution of Tokyo from its Edo roots.
● Sumo stables: Several sumo training stables are located nearby, and early morning visitors may catch glimpses of wrestlers in practice.
● Chanko-nabe restaurants: Traditional sumo hotpot dishes served in restaurants run by former wrestlers.
● Ryogoku Edo Noren: A cultural and culinary complex inside the JR station, featuring Edo-style architecture and specialty shops.
● Kira Residence Site (Honjo Matsuzaka-cho Park): Historical site linked to the famous tale of the Forty-seven Ronin.
● Sumida Ukiyo-e Museum: A compact museum dedicated to the vibrant world of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, showcasing works by masters like Hokusai and Hiroshige. It offers rotating exhibitions and educational displays that highlight the artistry and cultural impact of Edo-period printmaking.
● Ekoin Temple: A historic temple founded in 1657 to honor the victims of the Great Fire of Meireki. Known as the spiritual birthplace of professional sumo, it hosted charity sumo tournaments until the construction of Ryogoku Kokugikan in 1909. The temple also features memorials for animals and historical figures, reflecting its inclusive philosophy of remembrance.
● Kyu-Yasuda Garden: A tranquil Japanese stroll garden originally built in the Edo period and later restored in the early 20th century. Designed with a tidal pond once fed by the Sumida River, the garden features seasonal plants, stone lanterns, and winding paths that offer a peaceful escape from the city. Admission is free, and the garden is especially beautiful in spring and autumn.
