🌉 About the Netravati Railway Bridge

The Netravati Railway Bridge is one of the most iconic railway structures in coastal Karnataka.
Construction & Era: Built by the Madras Railway in 1907 during British rule.
Length & Location: About 0.83 km long (≈ 2,762 feet), spanning the Netravati (Ullal) River estuary, roughly 2 miles from the river’s mouth near Mangalore. At this point, the river is nearly 1.9 km wide, making the bridge a crucial link in the region.
Administrative History: On 1 January 1908, the bridge and its line came under the South Indian Railway, forming part of the main broad-gauge coastal route.
Engineering Significance: At the time of its construction, it was considered one of the longest and most challenging railway bridges in southern India.
Legacy: More than a century later, it continues to serve as a lifeline for trains entering and leaving Mangalore Central, including long-distance expresses and local passenger trains.
A new parallel railway bridge was constructed in the 2010s next to it in order to support dual-line traffic, easing congestion and allowing simultaneous train movement alongside the original historic bridge.
