How do you know if your steering head bearings are finished? The bike will handle terribly at low speed turns, it will feel like it suddenly dips into a turn instead of having a gradual and consistent feeling.

To check if you need to change the steering head bearings, place your bike on its centre stand, have someone push the back down so the front wheel raises off the ground and then slowly turn the handlebars left and right. If the suddenly fall into a notch in the middle you know it's time. The turn should be completely consistent with no change.
