In Tamil Nadu’s Kilvenmani, Dalit labourers' protest demanding higher wages – a quarter more than the pot of paddy they received as wage – led to a brutal massacre in December 1968. But what was the movement and how did Dalit women play a role in it? Did it evoke the sympathies of the intellectual elites?

In this two-part episode of What’s Your Ism, host Sudipto Mondal speaks to Ambedkarite author Shalin Maria Lawrence and sociologist-professor Khalid Aniz Ansari about the intersection of caste identities, anti-caste discourse, and affirmative actions for the oppressed castes in minority religions.

In part one, Lawrence shed light on the oppression encountered by Dalit Christians, anti-caste movement in Tamil Nadu, Periyar, and her lived experiences of discrimination in church. She says, “Periyar didn’t condemn anybody over Kilvenmani”.
