Simple Sliding Wood Door Latch (Latah) Design

A simple wooden latch, often called a “Latah” in South Asian and rustic woodworking traditions, is a clever, minimalist way to lock or fasten the door. Here's how to build and use one.

What is a Latah?
A Latah is a wooden latch system typically made from small hardwood pieces, designed to slide into place to secure a door. It's popular in rural and traditional homes due to its simplicity, affordability, and ease of repair.

Materials Needed:
Hardwood scrap (for durability)

Sandpaper

Wood glue (optional)

2 small wood screws

Hand saw or jigsaw

Drill (optional for pilot holes)

Ruler or measuring tape

Pencil

Design Steps:
1. Measure and Cut the Latch Pieces:
Cut a flat wooden base (approx. 5-6 inches long, 1.5 inches wide).

Cut a sliding bar (around 4 inches) that overlaps the base and can slide freely.

Sand all edges smooth to avoid splinters.

2. Mount the Base:
Screw the base into the door frame or wall adjacent to the door.

Make sure it’s level and firmly attached.

3. Install the Slider:
Place the latch bar on top of the base so it can move horizontally.

Drill a hole through the center of the bar and base and insert a screw loosely so the bar can pivot or slide.

4. Add a Stop Block (Optional):
You can attach a small block of wood at the end of the slider’s travel range to prevent it from falling off or extending too far.

How It Works:
Slide the bar across so that it blocks the door from opening. When you want to open the door, slide the bar back to disengage it. Simple and secure.

Customization Tips:
Add Carving: Carve a simple design into the latch for a decorative touch.

Paint or Stain: Match the latch with your door color or give it a contrasting accent look.

Use a Brass Pin: For added strength and style, replace the wooden pin or screw with a brass rod.
