We all know that shapes are everywhere. They're in the things we see and use every day, like stop signs, cars, and buildings. Learning about shapes helps kids understand the world around them and opens up a whole new world of early math concepts.



One of the first things kids learn about shapes is that some are round, like circles and ovals, and some are pointy, like triangles and diamonds. Other shapes are long and skinny, like rectangles, or have sides of different lengths, like stars and hearts.



There are lots of ways to help kids learn about shapes. Here are a few ideas:



Play shape I Spy. Look for objects around your house or classroom that are in the shape you're looking for. For example, if you're looking for a square, you might find a box, a picture frame, or a piece of construction paper.



Make shapes with playdough. This is a great way for kids to get a feel for what different shapes look and feel like.



Cut out shapes from construction paper or foam sheets. These can be used to make collages, pictures, or just to have fun with.



Use shape blocks or manipulatives to make patterns and pictures. This is also a great way to work on fine motor skills.



Go on a shape hunt. Look for shapes in the world around you, both indoors and out. You might find them in the clouds, in a puddle, or in a tree.

Five Little Ducks - This nursery rhyme is perfect for introducing kids to the concept of five. It also has some great opportunities to talk about the shape of ducks' beaks (ovals) and the shape of their bodies (rectangles).



BINGO - This classic game is a great way to work on recognition of shapes and numbers. You can even make your own Bingo cards using shapes instead of numbers.



Simon Says - This classic kids' game is a great way to work on following directions and listening skills. It's also a great opportunity to sneak in some shape learning. For example, you could say "Simon says touch your nose" or "Simon says stand on one foot."



Shape learning is an important part of early math education. Helping kids learn about the different shapes and what they look like is a great way to get them started on this journey. With a little creativity, you can turn shape learning into a fun and interactive experience for your kids.
