Homes on a slab are constructed directly onto a concrete footer and no basement is included in these foundations. This type of house is usually cheaper to build, and typically found in areas with a warmer climate in East Tennessee.
Houses with crawl spaces are built above a shallow, concrete foundation that can be accessed from the outside via an access panel or through an interior opening. Half of this type of home lies above the foundation and half is below it. This type of house is more common in East Tennessee, particularly in areas that experience cold weather since the crawl space helps insulate the house from cold air coming up from the ground. Crawl spaces can also be used for storage and easy access to plumbing or electrical wiring in East Tennessee.
