Come with us on a tahr hunt in New Zealand, testing the 223 Rem in some rugged South Island terrain!

After setting up camp and locating animals, everything was lined up for the shot — until the rifle jammed at the worst possible moment. We work through the issue in the field, get the rifle running again, and she makes a clean shot on a tahr.

Despite the gear problems, this was the best hunt of my life. Watching my daughter push through cold river crossings, long distances, and multiple previous trips to finally take her first tahr is something I’ll never forget. I couldn’t be prouder of her effort, patience, and determination in the hills — and it’s been pretty satisfying eating tahr tacos at home afterwards.

The trip finishes with the walk out, a closer look at the horns, and a hide prepared by my friend. The video wraps with a short Geek Zone, breaking down the rifle setup — what we love about it, where it caused problems and what we'll do to improve it.

Filmed in New Zealand during a legal tahr hunt. Tahr are an introduced species, and without hunting their numbers can increase to levels that cause environmental damage. All usable meat was taken from the animals, along with horns and hide, to minimise waste.
