Preserving soil will take more collaboration, more leadership, says Senator Black

Canada is a huge country with a relatively low population. In theory, that leaves plenty of land for growing food. But between the Canadian Shield, permafrost, the Rockies, highways and infrastructure, cities and towns there's far less land available than you might think, and less every year.

That means the demand put on each acre of arable land — the soil — only increases each year. Given these pressures, how do we keep soil productive and healthy now and in the long-term? Can we objectively measure soil health? What's the best way to share knowledge about soil?

These are all questions broached in the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry's new report on soil in Canada. Senator Rob Black has been a vocal supporter of the importance of soil and the importance of this report, and he joined host of RealAg Radio, Shaun Haney to talk about what he feels are the most important action items of the report. (Below)

Black says the first recommendations are the most important, including the appointment of a soil advocate, developing an overarching strategy for soil health in this country, and the importance of collaboration between provinces and territories, especially when it comes to sharing research and information.

What will it take to get there, and what challenges are ahead for achieving this vision? Watch this discussion for more with Senator Black.
